Ecologically Sustainable Construction: Issues in Residential Design
Paul Downton, Ecopolis Architects Pty Ltd, Australia
Ecologically sustainable construction encompasses a number of issues ranging from materials choice to construction practices. In one way or another they are all design issues, but there are core issues that any 'ecological' design process needs to take into account. With a checklist of these core issues this session explores the relative importance of key aspects of ecologically sustainable construction and how to deal with them through an informed design process. Drawing on a developed theory of ecological design and substantial practice experience and industry precedents, a matrix for design decision making is offered that connects the important pragmatic concerns of construction industry practitioners with the design community's aspirations towards environmentally advanced architecture and urban design
