Construction Company Leads through Integration of Three International Management Standards

A case study is presented of a construction company which merged the safety, quality and environmental standards OHSAS18001, ISO9001 and ISO14001 into an integrated management system. The paper outlines the difficulties and benefits of integration and demonstrates the ease of access to manuals, procedures, standard operating instructions, reports and record templates which resulted. Standardisation opens a gateway to world markets. To ensure product, service and performance consistency, many companies strive to meet their required national standards through an integrated approach, but in integrating international standards there are constraints that reflect varying levels of national development and cultural acceptability.
