Second Home Approaches and Sustainable Development of Hainan Island

Hainan is the second largest island of China (including Taiwan), with a total land area of 3.39 million hectares and a population of 7.87 million (March 2001). It located in the most southern part of China, close to Hongkong, Macau and Southeast Asian countries. Hainan Island lies between the tropical and subtropics with rich natural resources as well as natural landscape of tropical island, natural flavor, geothermal hot spring, cultural relics and rare animals and plants. All the domestic and foreign exports and tourists are enchanted by the blue sky, white clouds, bright sunshine, long coastline and many bays, white sandy beaches, coconut scenery and charming sea of Hainan Island. But it used to be one of the poorest regions in China until mid 1980s. For the goals of sustainable development of Hainan, the "second home" strategy is recognized as one most important and effective approach to realize the sustainable development of Hainan Island now.

The research focuses on below: the concepts of the second home in the world widely, the resources and marketing potential analysis for Hainan becoming the second home of China and South-east Asia, the policy design, the partnership and planning tools for the second home approaches, the significance of the second home approaches to the sustainable development of Hainan Island.
